Middle Georgia Technical College
Library Services for Students
Library Mission Statement
The mission of the Middle Georgia Technical College Library is to support and enhance the mission of the College by providing services and resources which contribute to the instructional and informational needs of the College community. In addition to reinforcing and enriching the curriculum with print, non-print, and electronic formats, the Library provides study space, computer access, and library-use instruction. It also seeks to further professional development and the lifelong learning skills of its users.
- Borrowing Policies
Borrowing privileges are extended to all current Middle Georgia Technical College students. Students must present a current student ID to register for a library account. Registration forms are available at the Library Circulation Desk.
Circulation:
Students may check out up to four (4) items for a period of fourteen (14) days. Items may be renewed up to two (2) times for a period of seven (7) days per renewal. You MUST have your student ID with you to check out materials. Overdue printed materials will incur fines of ten cents (.10¢) per day, per item. Audio/Visual materials are charged $1.00 per day overdue, per item. Lost or damaged materials will be charged the full cost of the item plus a $10.00 processing fee. Failure to return items or pay for lost/damaged material(s), or fines in excess of $10.00 will result in a hold being placed on the student’s BannerWeb account.
Renewals:
Students may renew materials in person at the Circulation Desk, by telephone, by email, or by using the online account access system.
Online Account Access:
A PIN number is used to access library records online. This allows you to renew items and/or place holds on items you wish to pick up by logging in to the Library Online Catalog with your ID number and PIN. If you would like to be able to access your library account online please contact the library for more information and to obtain your PIN.
Returns:
Please return Library materials to the Circulation Desk or, if the Library is closed, in the Book Return, located to the left of the main entrance to Building A.
Responsibilites of Borrowers:
- Excessive overdue materials may lead to suspension of borrowing additional library materials until overdue items have been returned, renewed, or paid for. Upon failure to comply, students will be reported to their immediate supervisor and/or supervising dean who will recommend action.
- Borrowers are responsible for loss or damage to materials/equipment loaned to them.
- Students will be billed for items not returned – cost of the materials plus a $10.00 processing fee for each item.
- Failure to return items or pay for lost/damaged material(s), or fines in excess of $10.00 will result in a hold being placed on the student’s BannerWeb account.
Recall:
After the initial loan period, items may be subject to recall should they be needed by another patron.
- Computer Acceptable use Policy
In order to distribute and maintain computer usage in the most efficient manner, a standard of behavior has been established for usage of the College’s computers. Please observe the following guidelines when using Library computers:
- Only currently enrolled MGTC students and currently employed faculty and staff have access to computers. Children are not allowed to use computers.
- The user name and password assigned to you by the College are required for computer access.
- Faculty may reserve computers for their classes/students in advance.
- School related use of Internet workstations takes precedence over recreational use.
- Save your work to the student “J” drive, a flash drive, or diskette. Library computers have “Deep Freeze” software loaded on them. Each evening any material saved to the hard drive or desktop is removed automatically. It cannot be retrieved.
- Report any hardware or software problems immediately.
- Report any policy violations immediately.
- Do not attempt to access “adult oriented” materials. Computers are monitored to insure appropriate usage. Activity is logged and prior use is traceable.
- Please do not use the computers to “chat” or to play games.
- Do not use the computers in violation of copyright law or in violation of any Federal, State, or Local laws. “Fair Use” of copyrighted materials is allowed. Copying beyond fair use is subject to MGTC disciplinary action and may be subject to criminal prosecution.
- Computer facilities may not be used for profit or commercial gain.
- For currently enrolled students printing (not photocopying) material related to school assignments is free. Non-school related/personal printing is $0.10 per page. Students may print one (1) copy of a resume; all other copies are $0.10 per page. Pay for printed materials at the circulation desk.
- Middle Georgia Technical College reserves the right to monitor and record the usage of all computer resources if prohibited, threatening, or abusive behavior has been observed or reported.
- Cooperative Agreements & Interlibrary Loans:
Currently enrolled students of Middle Georgia Technical College may check out materials from the Macon State College Library and the Fort Valley State University Library. In order to use this service, an authorization letter must be picked up from the MGTC Library staff.
Books and periodical articles not available locally may be obtained from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. Please call or email us for more details.
- Library Instruction:
Librarians are always available to offer assistance to students in the library, however, students who are having difficulty finding materials or information for their assignments may request an individual instruction session with one of the librarians. Requests for individual instruction sessions will be accommodated in keeping with the librarian’s schedule. Request should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Students may also take advantage of the Ask-A-Librarian feature on the library’s website or email us at library@middlegatech.edu
