R.D. Buchan Charitable Trust presents $50,000 grant to MGTC Foundation

R.D. Buchan Charitable Trust presents $50,000 grant to MGTC FoundationThe Middle Georgia Technical College (MGTC) Foundation was recently awarded a $50,000 grant by the Robert David Buchan Charitable Trust in Pulaski County. The funds provided by this grant will be used to support educational programs offered by Middle Georgia Technical College at the Sam Way, Sr. Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center.

After his death in 1973, R. D. Buchan, a long-time farmer, businessman, landowner and founder of the Pulaski Banking Company, provided for the Charitable Trust in his will to ensure the continued support of literacy and education in Pulaski County. His trust has provided numerous loans over the years to Pulaski County residents for the purpose of furthering their education beyond high school.

In a new effort, a local committee formed to oversee the trust decided to make grants to local educational and literary organizations. Trustees include Janis Sparrow, Pulaski County Superintendent of Schools; Tom Arnold, president of SunMark Community Bank, and John Way, president of PlantersFirst Bank.

Middle Georgia Technical College offers credit courses, non-credit continuing education courses, GED and Adult Literacy training, as well as Economic Development programs to benefit Pulaski County and the surrounding community at the Sam Way, Sr. Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center. The Center opened in January 2007 as a result of a partnership between local, state, and federal governments in addition to significant support from citizens of Pulaski County.

Three other organizations also received grants from the Buchan Trust. Along with the MGTC Foundation, grants totaling $200,000 were awarded to the Pulaski County Education Foundation, the Hawkinsville-Pulaski Arts Council, and the M. E. Roden Library.
