Criminal Justice
The public safety and criminal justice program is designed to introduce students to a variety of agencies and professions in law enforcement, private security, corrections, fire, and emergency management services. Students will examine the components of the criminal justice system, including the roles and responsibilities of the police, courts, and corrections. Students will also explore the differences between the adult and juvenile justice systems and between the civil and criminal law. The history and evolution of law enforcement in America will be covered as well as, law enforcement terminology, types and responsibilities of different law enforcement agencies, and various criminal justice systems issues. The classification and elements of crimes, the major criminal and traffic laws of Georgia, and crime prevention and detection strategies are also discussed. Other topics of discussion will include search and seizure, arrests, interview and interrogations, confessions, and police misconduct. Students will gain hands on experience in critical areas of crime scene investigation to include the collection and processing of evidence and the fundamentals of forensics science. Students will discuss various theories of the origins of criminal behavior, learn about organized crimes, and study serial offenders.
Job Outlook
Graduates may be eligible for employment in corrections, private security or investigations, protective services, with city and county law enforcement agencies, as fish and game wardens, bailiffs and other public or privates institutions in, or related to the criminal justice field. Average hourly wages in the State of Georgia range from $10.00 to $22.00 an hour.

Degree Types
At MGTC we offer three different levels of credit programs:
- Associate Degree
- Middle Georgia Technical College offers associate level degrees. They usually take 2 years to complete. AAS programs include general education (core) courses that may transfer to University System of Georgia schools in our state.
- Diploma
- Middle Georgia Technical College's Diploma Level programs usually take between 1 and 1.5 years to complete and include basic courses, as well as specific technical or occupational courses to prepare students for the workforce.
- Certificate
- Technical Certificates of Credit (TCCs) usually take about 2 quarters (half a year) to complete and generally focus on very specialized knowledge. These programs teach students specific skills that they can apply in the workforce.
