Office Occupations

BAT Program Image The Business Administrative Technology (BAT) program at MGTC is designed to train students to become professional administrative assistants and medical office clerical assistants. Graduates of the Business Administrative Technology program will be able to read, understand, and prepare standard types of business communications and demonstrate appropriate interpersonal, human relations skills.

The BAT program provides training on Microsoft Office Software Suite, Medical Clerical office skills, office machinery and equipment, telephone skills, medical transcribing skills, medical coding skills, and customer service training. The program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. We offer day and night courses as well as some online courses.

Job Outlook:

Graduates of the Business Administrative Technology program are prepared for employment in a variety of positions in today’s automated office. Entry level salaries in the Middle Georgia area range from $15,000 - $24,000.

Associate Degrees

Business Administrative Technology Degree

The Business Administrative Technology Associate degree program is designed to prepare graduates for employment in a variety of positions in today’s technology-driven workplaces. The Business Administrative Technology program provides learning opportunities, which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes the use of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database applications software. Students are also introduced to accounting fundamentals, electronic communications, internet research, and electronic file management. The program includes instruction in effective communication skills and technology innovations for the office. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of administrative technology. Graduates of the program receive a Business Administrative Technology, Associate of Applied Science degree.

Business Administrative Technology

The Business Administrative Technology diploma program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s technology-driven work environment. The program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills to retrain in the area of business administrative technology. Graduates of the program receive a Business Administrative Technology diploma with a specialization in either Business Administrative Assistant or Medical Administrative Assistant.

Administrative Support Assistant

This program prepares individuals to provide administrative support under the supervision of office managers, executive assistants, and other office personnel. Courses include: Introduction to microcomputers, word processing, office procedures, and accounting.

General Office Assistant

The General Office Assistant Technical Certificate of Credit program is designed to train students to perform duties more efficiently by being knowledgeable of word processing principles and practical applications. Primary emphasis is to provide the student with basic skills and knowledge of business office procedures to prepare for the workplace. The program will prepare students to enter employment as a Office Support Assistant and will upgrade the skills of current business office personnel working in the field.

Medical Billing Clerk

The Medical Billing Clerk Technical Certificate of Credit is designed to provide training for an entry-level position as a medical billing clerk. It is also designed for someone who has some basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills. The program provides training for individuals looking for a career as a medical billing clerk in the medical environment. Emphasis is placed on basic coding skills, clerical skills and computer skills.

Industry standards recommend that students completing the Medical Billing Clerk TCC have a proficient typing speed of 28 wpm or higher.  To help insure that you meet industry standards, it is recommended that all Medical Billing Clerk students take a typing test to reflect meeting industry standards.

Medical Language Specialist

The Medical Language Specialist technical certificate of credit program includes instruction in transcription, proofreading, and report analysis while applying medical terminology and computer application skills.

Medical Office Assistant

The Medical Office Assistant technical certificate of credit program is designed to provide the educational opportunities to individuals that will enable them to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to secure an entry-level position as a receptionist in a physician’s office, hospital, clinic, or other related areas. Technical courses apply to the degree or diploma in office technology.

Microsoft Office Applications Professional

The Microsoft Office Applications Professional Specialist Technical Certificate of Credit is designed to train the student in software applications of word processing, database, and spreadsheet in addition to general office skills such as filing, good telephone techniques, appropriate business ethics and office behavior. A minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute must be achieved or the completion of BUS 101, Beginning Document Processing. The Student can complete the required eight classes in two full-time day quarters and will be prepared for entry-level positions in the clerical field. Upon completion of this certificate, students may then transfer into the BAT Diploma Program for an additional three full time quarters to receive a diploma in Business AdministrativeTechnology.

Degree Types

At MGTC we offer three different levels of credit programs:

Associate Degree
Middle Georgia Technical College offers associate level degrees. They usually take 2 years to complete. AAS programs include general education (core) courses that may transfer to University System of Georgia schools in our state.
Diploma
Middle Georgia Technical College's Diploma Level programs usually take between 1 and 1.5 years to complete and include basic courses, as well as specific technical or occupational courses to prepare students for the workforce.
Certificate
Technical Certificates of Credit (TCCs) usually take about 2 quarters (half a year) to complete and generally focus on very specialized knowledge. These programs teach students specific skills that they can apply in the workforce.
