Barbering and Cosmetology

Cosmetologists practice the art and science of beautifying and improving an individual’s skin, nails, and hair. Hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists are projected to be one of the top occupations with the most job openings in Georgia over the next decade! The Cosmetology program at MGTC emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, hair treatments and manipulations, skin and nail care, reception, sales, and management. MGTC’s program also prepares students to take and pass the State Board Cosmetology exam.

Training in the cosmetology program goes beyond the classroom! Student put their skills to work in MGTC’s state-of-the-art training facility. Towards the end of the program, students have the chance to practice their newly developed skills on real clients!

Job Outlook:

Individuals pursuing careers in cosmetology have many career opportunities available: Hairdresser/hairstylist, manicurist, esthetician (skin care), educator, research, and platform artist. Entry-level salaries in the Middle Georgia area range from $20,000-$25,000.

Diploma Programs

Barbering

The Barbering program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for careers in the field of barbering. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, hair treatments and manipulations, haircutting techniques, shaving, skin care, reception, sales, and management. The curriculum meets state licensing requirements of the Georgia State Board of Barbering. The program graduate receives a Barbering diploma and is employable as a barber, salon/shop manager, or a salon/shop owner.

Cosmetology

The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, state laws, rules, and regulations, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, skin, hair, and nail diseases and disorders, hair treatments and manipulations, hair shaping, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, chemical reformation and application, skin and nail care, hair coloring, hair lightening, reception, sales, management, math, reading, writing, interpersonal relations development, computer skills, employability skills, and work ethics. The curriculum meets state licensing requirements of the State Board of Cosmetology. Program graduates receive a Cosmetology diploma and are employable as a cosmetology salesperson, cosmetologist, salon manager, or a salon owner.

Barbering for Cosmetologists

The Barbering for Cosmetologists technical certificate of credit program broadens career opportunities for existing cosmetologists by offering them specialized courses that concentrate on barbering practices. This program allows students who hold a current State of Georgia Master Cosmetology license to receive additional training that will qualify them to take the barbering exam. The objective is to train individuals who are looking to broaden their careers in the cosmetology field by obtaining the State Board Barbering license that will allow them to work anywhere in the State of Georgia. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, hair treatment and manipulations, haircutting techniques, shaving, skin care, reception, sales and management.

Cosmetology Instructor Training

The Cosmetology Instructor trainee TCC provides a course of study for learning the skills needed to teach the theory and practice of skills in cosmetology as required by the Technical College System of Georgia. Course work includes requirements for becoming an instructor, introduction to teaching theory, methods and aids, practice teaching, and development of evaluation instruments. Graduates of the program may be employed as cosmetology instructors in public or private education institutions and business in Georgia and many other states.

Shampoo Technician(Dual Enrollment Program Only)

The Shampoo Technician Technical Certificate of Credit introduces courses that prepare students for careers in the field of Cosmetology as Shampoo Technicians. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge required for job acquisition, retention and advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training for safety, sanitation, state laws, rules and regulations, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, skin, hair, hair treatments and manipulations, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, reception sales, management, employability skills, and work ethics. Graduates receive a Shampoo Technician Technical Certificate of Credit and are employable as a Cosmetology salesperson, salon manager, or salon owner.

Degree Types

At MGTC we offer three different levels of credit programs:

Associate Degree
Middle Georgia Technical College offers associate level degrees. They usually take 2 years to complete. AAS programs include general education (core) courses that may transfer to University System of Georgia institutions and other 4-year colleges in our state.
Diploma
Middle Georgia Technical College's Diploma Level programs usually take between 1 and 1.5 years to complete and include basic courses, as well as specific technical or occupational courses to prepare students for the workforce.
Certificate
Technical Certificates of Credit (TCCs) usually take about 1-2 semesters to complete and generally focus on very specialized knowledge. These programs teach students specific skills that they can apply in the workforce.
