Health Occupations

How would you like to have a career that allows you to feel good each day because you know you made a difference in someone's life? If you have the desire to make a difference, consider attending Middle Georgia Technical College to seek selection in the Practical Nursing program. Licensed Practical Nurses provide care for individuals, families, and communities. LPN students are trained to promote health and wellness, illness prevention, rehabilitation, and care for the dying. Your training at MGTC will include classroom and clinical settings. You will have opportunities to study and train in medical, surgical, obstetrics, pediatric, geriatrics, and mental health units. The variety of settings will allow you to choose a clinical environment that interests you. Students are selected each quarter into the nursing program. After completing the core requirements a student can complete the program in one year.

Job Outlook:

Upon graduation, the student must take a state board exam to receive a license to practice nursing. With the present nursing shortage you may be able to pick from many clinical settings upon graduation. MGTC nursing graduates in 2007 had a 100% board passage rate. Job placement is 100%! Entry-level salaries in the Middle Georgia area range from $23,000 - $30,000.

Associate Degrees

Health Degree

Students who have completed a health technology program at a diploma level may have that training apply toward earning an associate degree. The associate in applied science degree in health applies to those students who are best served by a customized degree. Potential students in this degree track will, after application procedures are completed, have their training, industry experience, and general academic level evaluated. An individual program of study will be designed and approved for each student by an advisor.

Radiologic Technology Degree

The Radiologic Technology associate degree program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for positions in Radiologic departments and related businesses and industries. Learning opportunities develop academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes a combination of didactic and clinical instruction necessary for successful employment. Program graduates receive a Radiologic Technology associate degree, have the qualifications of a radiographer, and are eligible to sit for a national certification examination for radiographers.

Medical Assisting

The Medical Assisting diploma program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today's medical offices. The program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of medical assisting. Graduates of the program receive a Medical Assisting diploma.

Practical Nursing

The Practical Nursing diploma program is designed to prepare students to write the NCLEX-PN for licensure as practical nurses. The program prepares graduates to give competent nursing care. This is done through a selected number of academic and occupational courses providing a variety of techniques and materials necessary to assist the student in acquiring the needed knowledge and skills to give competent care. A variety of clinical experiences are planned so that theory and practice are integrated under the guidance of the clinical instructor. Program graduates receive a Practical Nursing diploma and have the qualifications of an entry-level practical nurse.

Surgical Technology

The Surgical Technology diploma program prepares the student to be an integral member of the surgical team, working closely with Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Operating Room Nurses, and other surgical personnel to deliver quality patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. This is accomplished through a selected number of academic and occupational courses that provide learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce technical skills and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Theory and clinical practice are integrated under the guidance of certified conical instructors as well as clinical site preceptors. Graduates of this accredited program receive a Surgical Technology diploma and are qualified for employment as entry-level surgical technologists with eligibility to sit for the National Certification Exam.

Technical Certificates of Credit

Central Material Service Technology

The Central Material Service Technology Technical Certificate of Credit is designed to provide training in the specialty of central sterile supply and management for the student entering into, as well as the surgical technology student interested in this career this field. The extended specific technical courses would include sterile supply and equipment management and distribution, as well as a 180 hour rotation to the Central Service Department of local hospital facilities.

Medical Billing Clerk

The Medical Billing Clerk Technical Certificate of Credit is designed to provide training for an entry-level position as a medical billing clerk. It is also designed for someone who has some basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills. The program provides training for individuals looking for a career as a medical billing clerk in the medical environment. Emphasis is placed on basic coding skills, clerical skills and computer skills.

Medical Office Assistant

The Medical Office Assistant technical certificate of credit program is designed to provide the educational opportunities to individuals that will enable them to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to secure an entry-level position as a receptionist in a physician’s office, hospital, clinic, or other related areas. Degree Types

At MGTC we offer three different levels of credit programs:

Associate Degree
Middle Georgia Technical College offers associate level degrees. They usually take 2 years to complete. AAS programs include general education (core) courses that may transfer to University System of Georgia schools in our state.
Diploma
Middle Georgia Technical College's Diploma Level programs usually take between 1 and 1.5 years to complete and include basic courses, as well as specific technical or occupational courses to prepare students for the workforce.
Certificate
Technical Certificates of Credit (TCCs) usually take about 2 quarters (half a year) to complete and generally focus on very specialized knowledge. These programs teach students specific skills that they can apply in the workforce.
