Dantever Hicks Chosen as MGTC’s EAGLE Winner
Fort Valley - Dantever Hicks, a GED student from Fort Valley, has been chosen to represent Middle Georgia Technical College at the Exception Adult Georgian in Literacy Education, or EAGLE, Leadership Institute in Atlanta February 13-15. This Leadership Institute recognizes and honors students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult literacy classes and programs, including GED test preparation.
The purpose of the EAGLE Leadership Institute is to recognize and honor student not only for their academic success in the classroom, but also for their willingness to express how adult literacy has made a difference in their lives and their communities. The Technical College System of Georgia, through its Office of Adult Education, sponsors the annual Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Leadership Institute.
Hicks, after being down on her luck for a while, decided to pursue her GED in order to turn her life around.
“I wanted a new start,“ she said. “In today’s world you can’t do anything without an education.“
Hicks also credits her husband Roger with helping her to achieve her goal of working toward her GED.
“It’s never too late,“ said Hicks. “You are never too old to start learning again.“
Joi King, Adult Education instructor at MGTC’s Adult Education Center in Fort Valley, nominated Hicks for the EAGLE award.
EAGLE is the first statewide program in the nation that recognizes and rewards excellence among students enrolled in Adult Literacy programs. This student recognition program is designed to create greater awareness of educational opportunities that are available in local communities across the state and to foster greater involvement in lifelong learning pursuits.
