Chapman Rumney named MGTC’s Teacher of the Year
August 13 , 2007
After evaluating six of the college’s outstanding instructors, Cynthia Chapman Rumney, CIS Department Chair, was named the Middle Georgia Technical College’s 2007 Teacher of the Year.
“I’m thrilled the college has chosen me as the Teacher of the Year,” said Rumney. “I chose to teach in a technical college because of the ability to provide students real-life experiences in a practical learning environment. Witnessing the moment a student comprehends a difficult and vital concept is truly rewarding. Additionally, the technical college system provides me the unique opportunity to share with students the knowledge I acquired in the field through years of research, trial, and error. My work is rewarding in itself, but being nominated by my peers and selected by the interview committee is extremely gratifying.”
Mrs. Rumney has been with MGTC for seven years and has served as the chairperson for Computer Information Systems Department since 2005. Mrs. Rumney will compete against college winners from across the state for the Rick Perkins Award in September at the Lighthouse Institute. Lighthouse is a gathering where exceptional technical college instructors discuss best practices and learn about innovative teaching methods.
Julia Nell Shaw, the college’s Rick Perkins Coordinator, explained the importance of the Award. “The Rick Perkins Award honors the Technical College System of Georgia’s most outstanding instructors. The award has been an ongoing statewide event since 1991 and is designed to recognize technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields. Technical colleges across Georgia identify their most promising instructors and nominate them for the award based on innovative instruction, educational achievement, and college and community leadership.”
“During her years at Middle Georgia Technical College, Mrs. Rumney has exemplified professional strength and talent,” said Dr. Ivan H. Allen, MGTC President. “As both an excellent teacher and a distinguished leader, she has enriched the entire MGTC community.”
