MGTC Foundation Hosts 3rd Annual Golf Tournament

Warner Robins - The Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation hosted its 3rd Annual Golf Tournament Monday, March 24 at Houston Lake Country Club in Perry. A total of 23 teams participated in the event which raised over $36,000 for scholarships and enhancements to programs and services offered to students.

Hooterville Farms served as the corporate sponsor for this year's event. In addition, the tournament had 23 hole sponsors and five team sponsors. Two hole-in-one prizes were also available to the players. Jeff Smith Dodge of Perry sponsored a new truck on hole number 3 and Commercial Furnishings, Inc. of Macon sponsored a 10-day, all expenses paid trip to Hawaii on hole number 17.

Cheryl Stelk, MGTC director of College Advancement, said she was pleased with the results of the fundraising event.

"We had so many supportive sponsors for this year's event," Stelk said. "We especially want to thank our corporate sponsor, Hooterville Farms, for the generous support they gave to our tournament. We could not have had such a successful event without our dedicated sponsors."

The tournament started with lunch for all players followed by a shotgun scramble at noon. In addition, Houston Healthcare offered a free golf pain clinic prior to the event. At the conclusion of the round of golf, door prizes were given out and prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams.

Finishing first in the tournament was the team sponsored by Security Bank. Second place went to the Blue Bird Corporation team and third place was the Warner Robins SunMark Community Bank team. Fourth place awards went to Central Georgia Technical College.

Door prizes awarded to the players were sponsored by Step 2 , ACE Hardware (Fort Valley), Cedargreen Nursery, Lane Packing Company, Houston Healthcare, Ibalz Marketing, Houston Lake Country Club, Idle Hour Country Club, Oconee Harbor Club, Southern Hills Golf Course, River Forest Golf Club, Healy Point Country Club, Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club, Warner Robins Supply, Mike Long, Dana Golf, and The New Perry Hotel.

"We want to thank all of the sponsors and participants for their support," said Jim McClarnon, city president of SunMark Community Bank in Fort Valley and chairman of the MGTC Foundation Board of Trustees. "Shaw Blackmon, immediate past chair of the Foundation, also deserves credit for coordinating the effort. The money raised today will provide much needed funds for the MGTC Foundation to provide scholarships to deserving students, such as the ones who volunteered today."

Several MGTC students volunteered at the event because they received a scholarship or some means of financial support from the Foundation. MGTC Student Leadership Council co-advisors Debbie Wrenn, Dental Assisting instructor, and Bridgette Willis, a Computer Information Systems instructor, coordinated the student volunteers for the event.

"I think it's really important for us to show our appreciation to the people who make our scholarships possible," said Kevin Barkley, an Aviation Maintenance student and two-time scholarship winner. "I really enjoyed talking to the players and getting to know some of the benefactors for our scholarships. This was a great experience for me."

The Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the College and its students by supplementing available state resources with private funding to help further the College's mission of contributing to the economic and educational development of the community. The annual golf tournament is just one way in which the Foundation raises funds to support its mission. All donations made to the MGTC Foundation are tax-deductible.
