MGTC to Offer Commercial Truck Driving Program in Hawkinsville

Hawkinsville - Middle Georgia Technical College (MGTC) will begin offering a Commercial Truck Driving (CTD) program at the Sam Way, Sr. Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center starting Summer Quarter 2008. A generous donation from the R.D. Buchan Charitable Trust made it possible to offer the CTD course in Hawkinsville by providing funds for a truck and trailer. Applications for the first class are being accepted now.

"We are excited about expanding our truck driving program to Hawkinsville," said Ray Courtney, MGTC Commercial Truck Driving program chair. "We look forward to providing training to Pulaski County residents for a rewarding career."

The CTD program at Middle Georgia Technical College is a 10-week program. Courses include training in fundamentals of commercial truck driving, basic operation, and advanced operation of a commercial motor vehicle. After learning the skills necessary to operate a rig, students are required to spend at least 40 hours behind the wheel. This requirement is satisfied during the advanced operations course where students gain valuable experience thorough maneuvering the big truck on a driving range and driving on the highway.

Once students have completed the requirements of the 10-week course, they are awarded a technical certificate of credit and a class A CDL license. Upon entering the workforce, students can earn $24,000-$28,000 as an entry-level local driver and $38,000-$45,000 for over-the-road deliveries.

For more information on the Commercial Truck Driving program, please call 478.988.6800 or in Hawkinsville, 478.783.3017. Other programs available at the Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center include Criminal Justice Technology, Computer Repair Technician, Certified Manufacturing Specialist, as well as General Education courses. Two other new programs, Aircraft Structural Technology and Patient Care Assisting, are also accepting applications for Summer Quarter. Apply Now! Summer Quarter begins July 8.
