MGTC Hosts Open House and Senior Night
Warner Robins - Middle Georgia Technical College, along with the Stay in School Initiative, recently hosted the annual Open House for 8th through 12th grade students from Dooly, Houston, Peach, and Pulaski counties. In addition, for the first time, MGTC hosted Senior Night in conjunction with the Open House. The event, themed "Don't Drop Out, Drop In," attracted over 150 participants.
Students and parents, as well as teachers, principals, and other school staff, were invited to tour the MGTC campus in Warner Robins to learn more about the programs and services offered by the College. Faculty from the various program areas opened up their classrooms and labs to give students a peek at the type of training offered at MGTC.
"I think the lab areas are really neat," said one Northside Middle School student. "The Dental programs had a lot to look at and the program seems really interesting."
Each group of students was given a mini orientation session prior to their tour. Students were welcomed by Dr. Ivan Allen, president of MGTC, and then watched a presentation on Middle Georgia Technical College and the benefits of staying in school compared to what life would be like for a high school dropout. Students also learned about the availability of dual enrollment courses, which allow them to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. In addition, high school seniors received a free gift and participated in a special information session with MGTC Recruiters Latoya Lawson and Sandra Willcox.
"This type of event is important for the College as we continuously seek to educate the public about MGTC and what it has to offer," said Dr. Allen. "We want our secondary students to know the options available to them after they graduate from high school."
Participants were able to tour the campus at their leisure. Students from the Radiologic Technology program served as campus ambassadors to help show students around.
"Overall, I think the evening was a great success," said Alicia Long, manager of the Education and Career Partnership and the Stay in School Initiative. "I am proud of all the students and parents who came out to learn more about post-secondary education and the benefits of staying in school. Staying in school is the most important thing a young person can do."
