WR businessman named to state board

Warner Robins - A Warner Robins businessman is the newest member of the board that governs Georgia's technical college system.
Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed Z. Shaw Blackmon III, 35, to the state board of the Technical College System of Georgia.
Blackmon, who is CEO of National Bank Products, said he is taking his spot on the board starting with the September meeting. He is leaving his position on the Georgia Board of Community Affairs.
He has previously served as chairman of the Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation.
"Education has always been my passion," said Blackmon, whose father served as chairman of the Houston County Board of Education. "One of the most wonderful resources our state has is our technical college network."
His belief in technical education, he said, grew through working with Middle Georgia Tech's program to educate prisoners. Seeing the success of released prisoners who had earned a technical college degree, he said, showed him the difference it can make in someone's life.
Blackmon also noted that technical colleges offer programs to assist entrepreneurs and further the education of medical professionals.
"Educating people across the state as far as the benefits of a technical education is a thing for me and others to try to do because the perception for years is a little different than that," he said. "The people getting technical education (cover) a broad range."
His appointment continues a Houston County influence on the board. Local businessman Larry Snellgrove left the board after serving four years. Snellgrove said Blackmon was a good choice for the board.
"Shaw will do a good job," Snellgrove said. "He's been very active in the local college."
Blackmon also serves on the board of directors of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, SunMark Community Bank, the Museum of Aviation and the Houston County Heritage Foundation, which supports the school system.
