Warner Robins - By Janet Kelly and Bruce Foster
For the first time in its history, Middle Georgia Technical College (MGTC) will sponsor athletic programs at the club sports level.
During Fall Quarter 2008, MGTC officially began its athletic program by introducing men's and lady's basketball, as well as a cheerleading squad. As voted on by the student body, MGTC has adopted the mascot The Titans.
Games for both teams are still being scheduled, but they have already played scrimmages against teams such as Fort Valley State University, Wesleyan College, and the faculty and staff of Middle Georgia Tech. Upcoming games on the schedule include West Central Technical College, Northwestern Technical College, Columbus State University, and Albany Technical College. Currently, home games are being played on the campus of Fort Valley State University.
The men's team is made up of 13 members. Antonio Shelley serves as coach for the men's team. Shelley, who is also the Industrial Systems program chair at MGTC, is excited to lead the first basketball team at MGTC.
"I am really enjoying coaching the team," said Shelley. "The players are working hard and they are committed to excellence. We are a new program but over time we will progress. The games we are playing now against more experienced teams give us great practice and will serve us well in building our team."
Players for the Titans include Charahtis Jones of Warner Robins, Kevin Battle of Perry, Nick Manson of Fort Valley, Kenny Willis of Warner Robins, Gerrard Smith of Warner Robins, Tourris Leary of Perry, Michael Ingle of Bonaire, Brandon Whitehead of Fort Valley, Sheridan Thomas of Fort Valley, Antonio Holley of Warner Robins, Joshua Stanley of Cochran, Gabriel Wright of Fort Valley, and David Huntington of Bonaire.
Natalie Turner has taken the helm for the women's team. She also doubles as the Marketing Management instructor at MGTC.
"Coaching the women's team is a new and exciting adventure for me," said Turner. "I am glad to be a part of this history-making process and to have a hand in just one of the many ways MGTC provides a meaningful college experience for our students."
The Lady Titans have 9 players representing a variety of programs across the campus. Members of the team include Amanda Jones of Warner Robins, Calisha Hill of Warner Robins, Crystal Wade of Warner Robins, Tifany Gatewood of Warner Robins, Jessica Wright of Perry, Moneiscia Sanders of Warner Robins, Trenisha Johnson of Warner Robins, Ashley Hill of Fort Valley, and Vershonda Code of Perry.
Support for the men's and lady's teams are provided by the Titans cheerleaders. The Squad is lead by MGTC Assistant Registrar Courtney James and CARE Center Advisor Felicia Mackey. Members of the 2008-09 squad include Cheer Captain Jasmine Adams of Warner Robins, Crystal Green of Byron, Haley Langford of Pinehurst, Latalia Nicholls of Warner Robins, Alisa Rhodes of Macon, Tara Sprouse of Warner Robins, Tara Weber of Warner Robins, and Sommer White of Warner Robins.
