Scholarships Awarded at Middle Georgia Technical College
Warner Robins - The Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation recently awarded scholarships to 13 students at the Winter Quarter Awards Day ceremony held in March. Over $5,400 in cash awards were given to students to help with costs associated with furthering their education, including tuition, books, fees, and supplies.
The scholarship process is organized by the Financial Aid office at MGTC. After applications are submitted, a committee reviews the applicants to make award decisions.
Kimberly Dawn Layfield was the recipient of the Dr. James Cassidy and Dr. William Argo, Jr. Scholarship. She is a Dental Hygiene student from Ideal. This $250 scholarship was established to recognize an outstanding student in the Dental Hygiene program at MGTC.
Another Dental Hygiene student, Lori Jordan of Warner Robins, received the $500 Central District Dental Society Scholarship. This scholarship also serves to recognize an outstanding Dental Hygiene student
The Flint Energies Foundation also provided a scholarship for Winter Quarter 2008. To receive this scholarship, a student must in good academic standing and demonstrate economic need by stating how the scholarship will assist with childcare and/or transportation expenses. The recipient of this $500 scholarship was Edward Brown, II, an Aircraft Structural student from Warner Robins.
A $200 Warner Robins Rotary Club Scholarship was also awarded to Kevin Barkley. To earn this scholarship, a student must be on the President's Honor Roll and submit a written essay. Barkley is an Aviation Maintenance Technology student from Warner Robins.
Vonda Belcher of Hawkinsville received the Way Family Hawkinsville/Pulaski County Scholarship. This $500 scholarship was established by the Way Family of Pulaski County and it is awarded to deserving graduates of Hawkinsville High School and is to be applied toward the costs of attending Middle Georgia Technical College. Belcher is a Business Office Technology student at MGTC.
The Billy G. Edenfield Scholarship, named in honor of Middle Georgia Technical College's third president and current President Emeritus, is awarded to one deserving student who must be full-time and have a 3.5 cumulative GPA. The winner of this award must also submit an essay stating how the scholarship will help them reach educational goals and objectives. A letter of recommendation must also be submitted, along with a recommendation from a community member and submit a current resume. The winner of this $500 scholarship was Cynthia Raines, a Dental Hygiene student.
For the first time, a Cosmetology Department Scholarship was awarded during the Winter Quarter Awards Day ceremony. Jennifer Mullis of Warner Robins was the recipient of this inaugural $250 scholarship. The winner must be a Cosmetology student in good standing and submit an instructor recommendation and an essay stating how the scholarship will impact their attainment of educational goals and objectives.
Winter Quarter was also the first time the Danyel B. Allen Scholarship was awarded. This scholarship goes to a Practical Nursing student in good standing and enrolled in clinical courses. Students must provide a statement of economic need and a statement illustrating how the scholarship will aid in reaching educational goals and objectives. Danyel Allen, who graduated from a Georgia Technical College nursing program and is the first lady of MGTC, established this scholarship as a way to give back. The first winner of this scholarship is Simame Ncube of Macon.
In addition to these scholarships, the MGTC Foundation funded five $500 scholarships. For a student to be selected as an MGTC Foundation Scholar, they must have 3.0 GPA, submit and essay and instructor recommendation, plus two letters of recommendation from the community. MGTC Foundation Scholars for Winter Quarter 2008 are Jessenia Cruz, a Cosmetology student from Fort Valley; Melissa Chamberlin-Muhlenbruch, an Accounting student from Warner Robins; Luciana Rowe, a Practical Nursing student from Elko; Melissa Wilson, Business Office Technology student from Warner Robins, and Amanda Westbury, a Cosmetology student from Cordele.
The Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the College and its students by supplementing available state resources with private funding to help further the College's mission of contributing to the economic and educational development of the community.
