Houston County DA Kelly Burke Speaks to MGTC Criminal Justice Students
Warner Robins - Houston County District Attorney Kelly Burke recently spoke to students in the Middle Georgia Technical College (MGTC) Criminal Justice Dual Enrollment program at the Houston County Career and Technology Center (HCCTC). Bobby Brown, Criminal Justice instructor at HCCTC, invited Burke to speak and give students a personal account of the areas of Criminal Justice they have been studying in the classroom.
Burke presented a lecture to the students about his role and responsibilities as the District Attorney for Houston County. He presented the students with a lesson on prosecuting criminal offenders and gave students the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of the District Attorney's role in the enforcement of justice in Houston County.
Students were able to learn about the weekly routine of the Houston County District Attorney's office, which involves trials, bond hearing, plea hearings, and paperwork. Students were surprised to learn that much of District Attorney Burke's time is spent in court prosecuting criminals in Houston County. Overall, the students learned that prosecuting criminals is hard work and involves team work between the law enforcement and the District Attorney's office.
"It is not often that our students have the opportunity to interact with someone like District Attorney Burke who is experienced and highly respected in the field of Criminal Justice," said Brown. "Providing students with opportunities such as this truly helps them to better understand the role and responsibilities of those in the Criminal Justice field. We are very appreciative of District Attorney Burke and his support of our program. He truly serves and represents Houston County well."
