MGTC Foundation Awards Over $8,400 in Scholarships

The Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation recently awarded over $8,400 in scholarships to 21 students at the Spring Quarter Awards Day ceremony held in June at the MGTC Auditorium. Students will use the awards to help with costs associated with furthering their education, including tuition, books, fees, and supplies.

The scholarship process is organized by the MGTC Foundation. All students are invited to apply for scholarships during the early part of the quarter. After applications are submitted, a committee reviews the applicants to make award decisions.

Students selected for scholarships include Rhonda Lester, a Business Administrative Technology student from Unadilla, who received the BB&T Phi Beta Lambda Scholarship; Kenya James, an Cosmetology student from Byron, received the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship; Chasidy Lyngaas, an Dental Hygiene student from Hawkinsville, received the Way Family Scholarship; Stephanie Middleton, a Practice Nursing student from Warner Robins, received the Flint Energies Scholarship; and Jason Trussell, an Computer Support Specialist student from Warner Robins, received the Warner Robins Rotary Club Scholarship.

Other scholarship recipients include Stephanie Vera of Byron, who received the Medical Assisting Scholarship; Dianna Clark, an Accounting student from Hawkinsville, received the Way Brother's Memorial Scholarship; Elizabeth Mills, a Practical Nursing student from Macon, received the Danyel B. Allen Scholarship; Althea Biles of Perry and Vanessa Bowling of Warner Robins, both received the Thin Blue Line Criminal Justice Scholarship; and Barry Ingle, an Automotive Technology student from Kathleen, received the Firestone Scholarship.

The MGTC Foundation also awarded 7 Foundation scholarships. The Foundation is able to provide these scholarships through fundraisers such as the annual Golf Tournament, the Hooterville Hoedown Reverse Raffle, and the newest event, the Race for Education 5k/10.2k and fun run event coming up in August.

Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation scholarships were awarded to Justin Ballew, a Air Conditioning Technology student from Warner Robins; Isaac Bashir, a Practical Nursing student from Macon; Nicole Dent, a Business Administrative Technology student from Cochran; Cathy Foskey, a Radiologic Technology student from Adrian; Lauren Reilly, a Business Administrative Technology student from Bonaire; Jennifer Tschannen, a Paralegal Studies student from Warner Robins; and Deastrice Whitehead, an Early Childhood and Education student from Fort Valley.

In addition, the Leslie Sullivent Memorial Scholarship was awarded to two students. This scholarship, sponsored by Cade Daffin and Awaken Aveda Salon on Highway 247, was presented by Daffin and members of his team and Sullivent's parents, Sully and Melva. Leslie, who was a dual enrollment student in the Cosmetology program at MGTC, passed away earlier this year. Nicole Plaxico, a student at MGTC received one of the scholarships. Daria Turner, who was a dual enrollment classmate of Leslie's, received the second scholarship. She recently graduated from Houston County High School and plans to continue her education at MGTC summer quarter.

The Middle Georgia Technical College Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the College and its students by supplementing available state resources with private funding to help further the College's mission of contributing to the economic and educational development of the community. A large portion of funds raised by the Foundation are earmarked specifically for student scholarships. All donations made to the MGTC Foundation are tax-deductible.
