MGTC Saddened by the Death of President Emeritus Billy Edenfield

Administrators, faculty, and staff at Middle Georgia Technical College were saddened to learn of the recent passing of President Emeritus, Colonel Billy G. Edenfield. He passed away at the age of 74 on July 3 in West Monroe, Louisiana. He served as president of the College from 1990 to 2005.

"Mr. Edenfield was a true giant who loved and served his country, his state, and this College," said Dr. Ivan Allen, president of Middle Georgia Technical College. "Words cannot express the magnitude of the many contributions Mr. Edenfield made to our community."

After retiring from a 30-year military career with the Air Force, Edenfield was selected to serve as executive vice president at MGTC in December 1989. In July 1990, he was chosen by the Department of Technical and Adult Education to serve as the College's third president.

During Col. Edenfield's presidency at MGTC, he was responsible for many major accomplishments including the establishment of the College's current campus at 80 Cohen Walker Drive. He led the effort to plan, construct, and equip the 163,000 square foot campus. In addition, Col. Edenfield helped to increase diploma enrollment by 400 percent, added the adult education program, and expanded economic development programs.

Also under Col. Edenfield's leadership, House Bill 1187 allowed for the renaming of Middle Georgia Technical Institute to Middle Georgia Technical College after receiving accreditation to offer associate degree programs.

After his retirement as president in 2005, Edenfield served as a trustee on the MGTC Foundation Board until his death. He served the Foundation and its mission of supporting the College and its students and programs through various projects including the annual golf tournament and other fundraising events. During his tenure as a trustee, a scholarship was established in his name which provided $500 to a deserving student each quarter. Over 11 scholarships were dispersed totaling over $5,500.

Col. Edenfield is survived by his wife, Ginger. Funeral services will be held July 7 at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins at 11 am with internment to follow at Andersonville National Cemetery at 2 pm.
