MGTC Cosmetology Program Presents Strands for the Cure Donation
Warner Robins - Students and instructors in the Cosmetology program at Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins recently presented a check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of the Strands for Cure program. Stephanie Steinbart, executive director of Susan G. Komen Central Georgia, accepted the donation.
During the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cosmetology program raised $2,093 for the Central Georgia affiliate of the Komen Foundation, which is the nation’s most recognized supporter of breast cancer awareness and research projects. This amount donated by MGTC represents one-third of the total raised by the Stands for the Cure program in 2010.
Cosmetology Program Chair Jolie Martin and her students worked hard during the entire month to raise the money.
"My students really took ownership of this project and did a fabulous job," said Martin. "Thanks to the efforts of several students, we were able to get most of our supplies donated. Therefore, we were able to donate the entire cost of the strand, rather than the half that is customary."
Over 200 pink strands and streaks were sold for during the month. Some also chose to make a donation to the project, rather than purchase a streak. In addition, one student also gave of her own time to make breast cancer awareness ribbons to sell on campus for $1. This project brought in an additional $50.
Elegant Beauty Supply in Perry and Sally Beauty Supply in Warner Robins both donated supplies to help make the project a success. Students in the class also helped make the clip in pink streaks.
"This is the first year we have participated in Strands for the Cure," said Martin. "We were very pleased with our success and we hope we will be able to provide the same level of support for the program next year."
The MGTC Cosmetology program offers both day and evening courses. For more information on MGTC, or the Cosmetology program, call 478-988-6800 or log on to www.middlegatech.edu. Also, you can join the conversation and find MGTC on Facebook and Twitter.
