Theresa Watkins named 2007 MGTC GOAL Winner
March 15, 2007
Theresa Watkins, a Business Office Technology student at Middle Georgia Technical College, has been named college winner of the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) for 2007. Ms. Watkins is a full-time student at MGTC and resides in Warner Robins with her two children. Watkins will receive an all-expense paid trip to Atlanta where, for three days, she will compete with students from 38 other technical colleges and divisions in Georgia for the title of State GOAL Winner, the GOAL medallion, and a new automobile as the grand prize.
The Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education, which oversees the Technical College System of Georgia, sponsors the GOAL program statewide. At the college-level, the program is sponsored by the MGTC Foundation, the Warner Robins Area Chamber of Commerce’s Warner Robins Industry Now Group, and the Perry, Peach County, Hawkinsville-Pulaski, and Dooly County chambers of commerce and coordinated by MGTC.
In addition to Theresa Watkins, two other students were recognized and chosen as finalists for their outstanding achievement, character and leadership. They are Rachael Corazalla, a Practical Nursing student from Warner Robins, and Keri Olson, a Dental Hygiene student from Warner Robins. The outstanding students were nominated by instructors at the college. The nominees faced a college screening committee and an external selection committee, where they gave a three-minute speech and took part in a personal interview.
Linda Smithers, a Business Office Technology instructor at MGTC, nominated Theresa Watkins and will accompany her to the state competition in May. Theresa has a high moral character, a strong work ethic, and she strives diligently to achieve excellence in her work,” says Smithers. “She is always cheerful, and I feel that she is an excellent role model for our students.”
The GOAL program was the first statewide program in the nation that recognizes and rewards excellence among students enrolled in technical colleges.
