Local College Hosts Camp for High School Students

During the week of June 19th, several local high school students had their brush with “stardom.” Middle Georgia Technical College hosted Camp S.T.A.R., which stands for Supporting Technical & Academic Rigor. Camp S.T.A.R. served “at-promise” 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students from Northside High, Northside Middle, and Thomson Middle. The program was funded by the Stay-in-School Performance grant which encourages students not to drop out of high school. The students spent Monday, June 19th on MGTC’s campus and went to the Museum of Aviation's Education Department Summer program for three days. On Friday, students returned to MGTC’s campus for the closing workshops, a tour of the college’s programs, and a motivational speaker. Mr. Fred Stokes, of Vidalia, GA, former NFL player and Super Bowl champion, spoke to the youth about making good choices and doing whatever it takes to stay in school.
