MGTC Dental Hygiene Students to Give Oral Health Presentations at Houston County Schools
In honor of National Children΄s Dental Health Month, students in the Dental Hygiene program at Middle Georgia Technical College will be visiting Houston County elementary schools to make presentations about maintaining good oral health during the month of February.
This project will be part of the student΄s community rotation for Winter Quarter. As part of their educational program at MGTC, students must educate the public in some aspect of oral health, including proper brushing and flossing techniques, proper nutrition, tobacco cessation, and encouraging the public to have regular dental health check-ups.
In addition to these rotations in the local schools, the students will also visit one healthcare facility of their choice to encourage proper oral health care. During past quarters, students have visited with area Parent-Teacher Organizations (PTO) to educate about sealants and fluoride and Lamaze classes to educate new parents about nutrition for the pregnant women, as well as new baby and baby bottle tooth decay.
“I feel that it is important as health care providers that we have access to the public to educate them on such an important topic as oral health,“ said MGTC Dental Hygiene Instructor Stephanie Krajewski. “Many recent studies have shown that the health of the oral cavity is directly linked to the systemic health of an individual. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this connection.“
In addition to visiting the elementary schools in February, MGTC Dental Hygiene students will also make presentations to Houston County middle school students during April. They will present facts promoting tobacco cessation as part of their Health class.
Middle Georgia Technical College offers Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs. Dental Hygiene is an associate degree program, while students receive a diploma in the Dental Assisting program. In addition, as part of the clinical requirements for students in the Dental programs, MGTC offers dental services including cleanings, x-rays, and sealants.
