Growth Continues for MGTC at Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center

The Sam A. Way, Sr. Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center celebrates a milestone this month. It has now been a full year since the grand opening of the Center, giving Pulaski County citizens an option for taking Middle Georgia Technical College classes locally and providing a catalyst for economic development in the area.

The Hawkinsville Workforce Development Center (WDC) opened in January 2007 thanks to a partnership between local, state, and federal governments and significant citizen contributions. In addition to credit classes and economic development programs, the Center also hosts non-credit continuing education courses and GED and Adult Literacy training as well.

Since January 2007, the Hawkinsville WDC has witnessed steady growth in classes and programs offered by Middle Georgia Technical College in Pulaski County. For Winter Quarter 2008, which began January 8, the Center has a total enrollment of 92 students. These students are taking classes in Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Medical Office Specialist, and general core classes.

Plans are also underway to expand class offerings to include classes in Commercial Truck Driving and Aircraft Structural Technology.

In addition to making more credit courses available, the WDC has increased opportunities for local high school students to get a head start on their post-secondary education through the dual enrollment program. Previously, students had to travel 35 miles to the Warner Robins campus to complete college courses. By earning their high school diploma and a diploma or degree from Middle Georgia Technical College, these students will be able to enter the workforce with the skills and training that have been identified by regional employers as critical to success in the workplace.

The 14,494 square foot learning center was built with a $500,000 OneGeorgia grant and funds from a CDBG grant, USDA loan and a private anonymous donation.  The facility contains multi-purpose classrooms and lab areas for technical and industrial training. In addition, the entire campus has wireless internet access.

Classes offered at the Hawkinsville Center can count toward a diploma or an associate΄s degree in programs currently being offered at the college’s main campus in Warner Robins.
