Adult Education

Welcome to the world of Adult Education. The future is bright!

Let MGTC start you on the right road to your future. Middle Georgia Technical College provides services to the community which enable them to become better, more rounded people and to thrive in their environments. We desire to make our community better, and we believe that starts with the person.

Free basic and secondary level instruction for adults is provided through the adult education program. The on-campus literacy center is open Monday-Thursday. There are eleven additional adult literacy centers located throughout Houston , Dooly , Peach , and Pulaski counties. Evening classes are also available in these counties for your convenience. Anyone interested in registering for these classes should contact the Adult Literacy Office at (478) 988-6851.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost to you. Classes and books are provided at no charge. There is a $95.00 initial testing fee and a $19.00 per section retest fee for the GED examination. There are 5 sections on the test. Pre-registration is required.

How can you help?

Volunteer to help as a one-on-one tutor, small group tutor, teacher assistant, clerical/office assistant, or in many other areas. Contact the volunteer coordinator today at (478) 929-6789.

English as a Second Language

ESL provides classes to the non-English speaking population. Classes are offered at three levels:

  • Beginning or Conversational
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

We currently have several locations within a four county area (Dooly, Houston, Peach, and Pulaski) that offer ESL classes.

Citizenship and life skills are also available. Some classes are located in local churches. All classes are free.

Family Literacy Programs

Providing opportunities for parents and children to improve their literacy skills in a positive environment. There are four components to the program:

  • Adult Education --- Prepares parents in reading, math, and writing skills and GED preparation.
  • Childhood Education --- Focuses on literacy skills for children with an emphasis in reading.
  • Parent & Child Together --- Brings the parents and children together to help parents become the child's most important teacher.
  • Parent Time --- Offers topics of interest such as life skills, coping skills, job skills and much more.

This program is offered in Houston County and Peach County at several locations.

Workplace Literacy

Employees play a major role in the economic development of our community. Addressing the literacy needs of employees can help improve literacy in the workplace. Middle Georgia Technical College provides a customized workplace program to improve the basic skill levels of employees. The program is designed using a functional context approach -- the skills learned are applicable to the workplace. Computer technology is a major asset in the workplace program. State tax credits are available to employers that participate in this education program.

General Educational Development

Courses in preparation for the General Educational Development (GED) examination are offered at Middle Georgia Technical College through the Adult Education Departments. The classes are open enrollment and individualized. The classes prepare you for all five parts of the test: Mathematics, Language, Essay, Science and Social Studies. Day and evening classes are offered at most locations.

GED Testing

Pre-registration is required and can be done at the Corder Road Campus. Pre-registration should be done two weeks prior to the test date. A cash payment of $95.00 for the entire test is required at the time of registration. Retests are $19.00 per section (there are 5 parts to the test). All GED test fees are non-refundable. It is recommended that initial testing be completed in two testing sessions within a maximum period of six weeks. Special permission prior to testing is required for applicants under 18 years of age. Applications for special permission for under age testers can be picked up at the Corder Road Campus (1311 Corder Road, Warner Robins, GA 31088).

Applicants should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to testing time. Applicants must have a photo ID that indicates date of birth. GED tests are available in the following special editions: Audio cassette, Braille, Large Print English, French, and Spanish

Once the test begins you are given a total of 7 hours and 5 minutes to complete all parts of the GED test. The content of the test is as follows:

  • Test I
    • Language Arts, Writing, Part 1 - 75 minutes
    • Language Arts, Writing, Part 2 - 45 minutes
  • Test II
    • Social Studies - 70 minutes
  • Test III
    • Science - 80 minutes
  • Test IV
    • Language Arts, Reading - 65 minutes
  • Part V
    • Mathematics - 90 minutes

The minimum passing score per section is 410 with a total score of 2250.Test scores are computed in Atlanta. Once you have passed the entire GED test, the state will mail your test results, your GED certificate and a $500 voucher to be used towards education.

GED Classes

Free GED preparation classes are held in Dooly, Houston, Peach and Pulaski counties, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Night classes are also available in all 4 counties. Students under the age of 18 must have a Formal Withdrawal Form from the last school attended prior to enrolling in GED preparation classes.
